Chinoiserie (or Chinese-inspired) motifs are much more rare than rocaille or neoclassic designs. First appealing to Madame de Pompadour, the style grew in popularity among members of the royal family under Louis XVI. During his reign, the Sèvres workshops developed the art of miniatures, recruiting enamellers who possessed special artistic skills and techniques. These painters, such as Jean Bouchet who is responsible for this cup, were considered to be the best in their field.
